Flaming Personal Computer
Who said that only burgers and steaks can be flaming hot? Computers too! At least my computer, that is…
My PC broke down last Tuesday. My diagnosis? The power supply already gave up and killed itself due to abuse. So I immediately bought a new power supply the following day and following a friend’s advice, bought a branded one with a higher power rating. I was so excited to revive my PC again so I replaced the suicidal power supply with the new one as soon as I got home. Everything was perfect. The humming sound made by the hard disks and the beep by the motherboard was music to my ears. At last I can play DOTA again and I can continue downloading animes.
I was faced with a blank monitor. The keyboard didn’t power up as well as the mouse. All USB devices (except for the mouse) and all the fans were powered up as they should. The LAN card and the video card’s LEDs are all alit. A minute later, smoke came out of my PC box!!! Woah! There’s a lot of smoke! I quickly turned off the Voltage Regulator.
I opened the box to inspect. The smoke was very thick and the smell was funky. I can’t seem to see what burned. So I proceeded to turn the machine on again. Wow! Not only did the LED’s lit up but also the wire from the power supply to the floppy drive! It was like seeing pillars of fire in a cloudy sky inside my machine! Obviously, my floppy drive is now dead. Holy Moses!
I will send back the power supply to the retailer ofcourse but I don’t know how extensive the damage it made. Most likely the motherboard also got fried up since there is no monitor display and the mouse and keyboard isn’t powering up. Oh well… I guess I’ll have DOTA-less nights for a few weeks until I figure everything out.
